Streusel-filled coffee cake, from the Betty Crocker cookbook, ca 1950

Mix together:

3/4 C sugar
1/4 C shortening (I've never tried butter, but I'd bet you could use it
here, at least partly)
1 egg

Stir in:

1/2 C milk
1 1/2 C flour
2 t baking powder
1/2 t salt

Make streusel:

1/4 C brown sugar
2 T flour
2 t cinnamon
2 T butter, melted

Using a greased and floured 9" square pan:

Spread 1/2 batter in pan
Sprinkle 1/2 streusel
Repeat with second half of batter and streusel

Bake 25 - 35 minutes at 375f
