And still, here in University-town, we have lots of local retailers
who are doing a healthy business. Carpeting, flooring, flower shops,
candy stores, drug stores, tire shops and garages, lumber yards,
landscape nurseries, appliance stores AND one of the country's best-
known non-chain bookstores (Prairie Lights) ... all of these are
possibly (probably) more expensive than Wally World or other chain
stores, but doing nicely just the same. The locally-owned shops
compete not only with a couple Wal-Marts, but also with Iowa's second
biggest mall.

What we don't have is year-round fresh produce of all kinds, given our
climate.
