Not so. ;-)

There are plenty of charity care programs available.

One of my best friends has HIV. I was with her when she was diagnosed.
She was so broke at the time, she was sleeping on my couch and using my
PO box until she was able to find a stable job and get back on her feet.

The state paid for all of her treatments and meds. The nice thing about
that was that she got the newer, "experimental" meds so actually has
done better. She is at the 15 year mark now and still going strong.

Kili lives in Florida. She can also vouch for being able to get the care
she needed for cancer treatment and could not afford.
