With the television, either you or someone else is paying for the program
to be broadcast. I don't think anyone has a problem with people taping the
program to watch it at another time. The bigger concern is when you start
distributing it.
I can't say that I have a hell of a lot of sympathy for the record and
movie companies. They have been screwing artists for years. They want to be
paid every time their movie is shown, but they don't want to pay the actors
and technicians residuals. The idea behind "The Producers", where people
are promised a percentage of non existent profits is not so far fetched.
Harold Groom, author of "Forrest Gump", was screwed out of the profits from
the movie. He was supposed to get 3% of the profits, but (as of 1995) there
were no profits, despite it being the third highest grossing movie of all
time.
There are countless similar cases in the movie and recording business.
